MEET THE TEAM – DEYANA "RED" STUEBNER
With almost a decade in the industry, Deyana’s love of barbering comes down to two things: the old school traditional approach, and the way in which it allows men a little TLC (which she reckons isn’t quite so easily available to them as it is to women).
Deyana’s joy at work comes from seeing people leaving in a better mood than when they come in. A professional all-rounder, she is nevertheless particularly good at beards! Outside of work, she competes in powerlifting at an international level. With a 5-year-old son, being the best possible influence on him each day is her driving force. Read on to find out about the parallels between barbering, mothering and powerlifting…
Your “other job” as Mum and your caring TLC approach to barbering might seem a little surprising to people who know you first & foremost from your powerlifting career. Do you see any parallels between your passions?
Yes, I do see parallels between my passions. What’s similar between the two is that I have the same drive and passion for both – I apply myself and keep myself motivated and always strive for my best in both barbering and powerlifting. Both areas are competitive in different ways but appeal to my competitive instinct in the same way; to always be better!
Do you remember the first haircut you ever gave someone? What got you interested in barbering in the first place?
I do, it was on an elderly man and it was terrible! The senior hairdresser had to fix it up and she wasn’t happy! I’ve always had an interest in barbering for its tradition and funk. I like the finer detail that it needs to really bring the haircuts together for a perfect finish. Beards are also a biggy for me and what better place to find them than a barber shop!
What’s your favourite thing about Lilydale and favourite thing about working at Lefty’s?
Since working in Lilydale the past year, I’ve noticed that people are very supportive of the small businesses that are trying to have a go! I love that. Working at Lefty’s has been the best! The environment is great and welcoming to all. My favourite bit about Lefty’s would have to be the unconditional support I get from Lefty herself – every good business needs a backbone and she’s got it 100%.
What’s the best thing about being a barber, and what are you less keen on in the job?
Best thing would have to be seeing how happy people are when they leave the shop and how I can change their mood with a little TLC, and the beards !
Do any people or trends in the industry inspire your work?
The whole barber community is an inspiration. I’m always keeping an eye on different style and trends to up my skills.
Are there any brands, products, equipment or other professional tools that you swear by?
Wahl and Andis have been my go to with brands and for products I generally find a new fav within the product brands in the store.
If you let your imagination roam, what’s your dream path in your future as a barber?
I’d love to combine my passion for barbering and powerlifting in some way in the future!
